Early Life and Family

Eddie Bennell was born as Thomas Bennell in 1939. His birthplace was near a town called Brookton. His parents were Edward Sterling Bennell and Elsie May Bennel. Eddie was the youngest of five children in his family. He had three older brothers named Brain, Avon, and Wayne, and one sister named Nancy.

When he was young, Eddie lived on an Aboriginal mission. This was a special community set up for Aboriginal people. It was located just outside of Brookton.

Growing Up and Starting a Family

Eddie married Rhonda Sully, who is now known as Rhonda Winmar. They started their family while living on the mission near Brookton. Their first two children were girls, named Tracy and May.

Later, Eddie and Rhonda moved their family closer to Perth, which is a big city. They first lived in a suburb called Maylands. After that, they had three more children: Olman, Eddie, and Maxine. In the mid-1980s, while living in Gosnells, their family grew even more. They welcomed two more children, Allan and Kirsty, who were adopted.

Family Connections and Influences

Eddie and his father, Edward, took part in a system that allowed them to get "dog tags." These tags were like special permits. They helped Aboriginal people move around more freely to find jobs. This was important for them to improve life for their families and relatives.

Eddie was very close to his uncle, Jack Davis. Jack Davis was a famous Aboriginal playwright in the 1980s. A playwright is someone who writes plays for the theater. Jack Davis had a big influence on Eddie. He inspired Eddie to become a playwright himself.

A Leader for His Community

Eddie Bennell was not just a writer; he was also a leader. In 1974, he became the very first chairman of the National Aboriginal Commission. This important group was based in Canberra, Australia's capital city.

The National Aboriginal Commission was set up to represent Aboriginal people. It worked to give them a voice in government decisions. Being the chairman meant Eddie helped lead this important work. He played a key role in speaking up for Aboriginal rights and needs.

Later Life and Legacy

Eddie Bennell passed away on January 18, 1991. He died at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital. At the time of his death, he was living with his family in Coolbellup, which is in Fremantle.
