Eduard Karel Alexander de Neve (born January 1, 1882 or January 2, 1885 – died August 30, 1943) was a famous Dutch football player. He played as a forward for teams like Velocitas Breda and HBS Craeyenhout. He also played for the Netherlands national team.

Early Life

De Neve was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. This was in either 1882 or 1885. His father, also named Eduard Karel Alexander de Neve, was a major in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army. His mother was Johanna Christina Fokker. When De Neve was about 9 or 10 years old, his father passed away. After this, his family moved to the Netherlands.

Football Career

When De Neve moved to The Hague, he joined the football club Quick. Later, he joined the Royal Netherlands Army. While in the army, he played football for Velocitas Breda. This club was linked to the Royal Military Academy of the Netherlands.

In 1905, he moved to HBS Craeyenhout (football club). In his first season back in The Hague, he helped his team win the Dutch national football title.

First International Match

De Neve was part of the very first Netherlands national team. Their first game was against Belgium on April 30, 1905. This match was for the Coupe Vanden Abeele. De Neve scored the first goal of the game after 80 minutes. The score was 1–1 after normal time.

Then, in extra time, De Neve scored three more goals! He scored at 106, 117, and 119 minutes. The final score was 4–1. The Netherlands won its first-ever match. Amazingly, De Neve scored all four Dutch goals!

Later International Games

Two weeks later, on May 14, 1905, the Dutch team played Belgium again. This game was in Rotterdam. The Netherlands won 4–0, and De Neve scored two more goals.

His third and final international match was on May 13, 1906. Again, it was against Belgium. This time, the Netherlands lost 2–3. In total, De Neve scored six goals in just three international games. He was the top scorer for the Netherlands national team for a long time. His record was only broken on March 21, 1909, by Edu Snethlage.

End of Playing Career

In 1907, De Neve had to stop playing football. This was because of a knee injury and his military service. He was sent to the Dutch East Indies for his service.

In 1938, he published a book about his football life. It was called Koning Voetbal, which means "King Football". He wrote it when the Dutch East Indies team played in the 1938 FIFA World Cup.

Military Career

On July 27, 1909, De Neve was promoted to First Lieutenant. He left the army with honor two months later.

Personal Life

De Neve worked for different Dutch companies and farms in the Dutch East Indies. In 1913, he got engaged to Daisy Maud Green in Genoa, Italy. They got married on August 14, 1914, in Lubuk Sinapeng in the Dutch East Indies. They had one son, Gilles Pieter Cornelis de Neve, who was known as 'Gilles Jr.'

After 12 years, De Neve and Daisy Maud got divorced. Daisy Maud and Gilles Jr. moved to The Hague. De Neve stayed in the Dutch East Indies.
