Eddyville was a small community that no longer exists today. It was located in Humboldt County, California. This former settlement was about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) south of a town called Arcata. Eddyville was situated at a low elevation of just 36 feet (11 meters) above sea level. Even though it's gone now, Eddyville could still be found on maps as late as 1942.

What Was Eddyville?

Eddyville began in 1916. It was created to serve a very important purpose for a company called the Pacific Lumber Company. This small settlement was the very first lumber camp for the company.

Life in a Lumber Camp

A lumber camp like Eddyville was a temporary home for workers. These workers cut down trees and processed timber. Life in such camps was often tough. Workers lived close to where they worked. This helped them be efficient in their jobs.

Why Did Eddyville Disappear?

Many small settlements like Eddyville were built for specific industries. When the industry moved or changed, the settlements often disappeared. Eddyville likely faded away as the lumber operations changed over time. Today, only its name remains on old maps and in historical records.
