Ede Ulfert Staal (born August 2, 1941 – died July 22, 1986) was a popular Dutch singer and songwriter. He came from the northern part of the Groningen province in the Netherlands. Ede Staal was famous for singing most of his songs in the local Gronings dialect.

Early Life and Music
Ede Staal was born in 1941 in a place called Warffum. His father was a teacher, and Ede decided to follow in his footsteps later in life.
Ede started making music when he was just five years old. He was inspired by his grandfather, who was a music director in Leens.
Becoming a Star
Ede Staal's big break came in 1974 with his song "I'm in the blues". At first, he sang in English because he had studied English at university.
In 1981, he started singing in the Gronings dialect. This made him very well known. Some of his famous songs in Gronings include the funny "Mien toentje" (which means My little garden). Another popular song was "t Het nog nooit zo donker west" (meaning It has never been so dark before).
One of his last songs was the touching "Mien hogelaand" (My high land). In this song, Ede Staal sang about how much he loved the area where he grew up.
Awards and Recognition
Ede Staal was going to receive the K. ter Laanprijs. This award was for his great efforts to promote the local language of Groningen. Sadly, he passed away in July 1986. Because of this, his wife received the award for him on October 4, 1986.
His Life and Legacy
Besides being a musician, Ede Staal was also an English teacher at a local high school. He married Fieke Spoel, and they had six sons together. They lived on different farms throughout the Groningen province.
Ede Staal died from cancer in Delfzijl when he was 44 years old. He was very famous at the time of his death. Even today, he is still a beloved figure in his home province of Groningen. Many people outside the Netherlands also enjoy his music.
After he passed away, Ede Staal became a true icon in Groningen. A special monument was built to honor him near Delfzijl, where he died. His music has been translated into different languages. One of his songs, "Termunterziel", was even played all the way in Japan!
