The Edeka Group is the largest German supermarket company. As of 2017, it sold about 20% of all groceries in Germany. It started in 1907.
Today, Edeka is made up of many independent supermarkets. These stores work together under one main company. This main company is called Edeka Zentrale AG & Co KG. Its main office is in Hamburg.
There are about 4,100 stores with the Edeka name. These stores range from small corner shops to very large supermarkets. In 2007, Edeka bought most of the Plus discount stores. These stores then became part of Edeka's Netto brand. By 2018, this meant about 4,200 Netto stores. In total, Edeka had 13,646 stores across all its brands by the end of 2017.

Edeka's Story: How It Grew
Edeka started in 1907. It was a group for small shop owners. They worked together to buy goods. This helped them get better prices. The group was first called E.d.K. This stood for "Purchasing Cooperative of Colonial Goods Retailers". It was in the Hallesches Tor district of Berlin. But the group was officially founded in Leipzig.
In 1911, the name changed to Edeka. This was a shorter, easier way to say E.d.K. A special bank, the Edekabank, was started in 1914. By 1923, Edeka had a central system for bills. This made things easier for all the stores.
After World War II
After the Second World War, Edeka had to rebuild its stores. The main office moved to Hamburg. In 1972, the way Edeka was set up changed. It formed twelve regional companies. The main company and the Edekabank also changed. They became a type of public company.
In 2001, Edeka created its own brand of products. This brand is called Gut & Günstig. From 2003 to 2012, Edeka worked with another large store, Globus.
Famous Christmas Commercial
In 2015, Edeka made a very popular TV commercial. It was for Christmas and called #heimkommen. The ad was about a lonely grandfather. He wanted to see his family for Christmas. This ad was meant for people in Germany. But it became famous all over the world. By December 2015, it had over 43 million views online. By June 2019, it had nearly 62 million views.
In 2018, Edeka started working with Telekom Germany. They launched a new mobile phone brand called Edeka smart. This replaced an older partnership with Vodafone.
