About Eden Box

Early Life and Education

Eden Box was born in London in 1919. She studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic in central London. She attended this school between 1936 and 1939.

Travels and Inspiration

After finishing her studies, Eden married Professor Marston Fleming. He was a senior researcher at Imperial College London. Eden traveled with him on his research trips around the world. They visited places like North America, Asia, Africa, and Russia. These travels gave Eden many ideas for her paintings.

She loved to paint animals and people using bright colors. Her style was very unique and artistic. Many of her paintings had Christian themes. For example, her painting The Expulsion (from 1951) is now in the Tate museum. It shows animals in the Garden of Eden with two small human figures. Above them is a flaming sword and angels. Eden also found ideas for her art in books. She used stories and poems by famous writers like Alexander Pushkin, William Morris, Andrew Marvell, and William Blake.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Eden Box's art was shown in many places. In 1964, she took part in an exhibition called The World of the Innocents. This show was held at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, France.

She had her first solo art show in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London. Throughout her career, she had fifteen solo exhibitions. These included shows in Rome and two in New York at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1953 and 1958.

Later, in 1981, a special exhibition of her work was held at the David Carritt gallery. The famous artist Howard Hodgkin wrote the introduction for the exhibition's catalog. He greatly admired her paintings. Other special shows of her art were held in 1956 and 1979 in King's Lynn. Roy Strong, a well-known art expert, also praised her work in an article for Vogue magazine in 1978.
