Edgar Gilmer Dawson grew up in Greene County, Georgia. In 1849, he graduated from the University of Georgia. He earned an A.B. degree, which is a type of college degree.
Family Life
In 1856, Edgar Gilmer Dawson got married. His wife was Lucy F. Terrell. She was the daughter of Dr. William Terrell from Sparta, Georgia.
Service During the Civil War
From 1861 to 1864, Dawson served in the Civil War. This was a big war in American history. He started as a Captain and later became a Major. He was part of a group called the Terrell Light Artillery.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Dawson moved. From 1867 onwards, he lived in Baltimore, Maryland.
His Legacy Today
Edgar Gilmer Dawson's name is still remembered today. The Edgar Gilmer Dawson Fund helps support education about farming at the University of Georgia. Also, a building at the university is named after him. This building is called Dawson Hall. It is where the College of Family and Consumer Sciences is located.
