The Edgar Zabriskie House: A Historic Home
The Zabriskie Residence is known as one of the best examples of the Queen Anne style in Omaha. This style was very popular for homes in the late 1800s. The house has many interesting features that make it stand out.
Who Was Edgar Zabriskie?
Edgar Zabriskie was an important person in his time. He was a ship officer, which means he worked on ships. He also served as a soldier in the American Civil War. After the war, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, a very big railway company. He was a general agent and an accountant, handling important business and money matters for the railroad.
Building a New Neighborhood
In the 1880s, Bemis Park was a brand new area being developed for homes. Edgar Zabriskie was one of the first people to buy land there. He wanted to build his house in this new residential suburb. The house was designed by a company called Fowler & Beindorff. These architects also designed many other important buildings in Omaha. For almost ten years after it was built, the Zabriskie Residence and its carriage house (a small building for horses and carriages) stood almost alone on a hill. It wasn't until the early 1900s that more homes were built around it.
Special Features of the House
The Zabriskie House has many unique details. It has different types of walls and tall, varied rooftops. You can also see a round turret, which is like a small tower. The house has both straight and round-arched windows. It also features big, noticeable gables (the triangular parts of a wall under a sloping roof) and chimneys. Today, the house is still in great shape. It even has its original gas lamps, which still work!
