Edgars Creek is a small stream in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one called Merri Creek.

Edgars Creek

Edgars Creek starts in an area called Wollert. This area has flat lands made of a type of rock called basalt. The creek then flows south through several suburbs. These include Epping, Thomastown, and Reservoir. Finally, it joins the Merri Creek in North Coburg.

Cool Discoveries Along the Creek

Along Edgars Creek, there are some really interesting natural spots. You can find a waterfall made of very old rocks. These rocks are from a time called the Silurian period. There's also a tall cliff that shows off ancient sediments. These sediments are from the Melbourne Formation.

Scientists have also found old river terraces and bends. In these spots, bones of huge, extinct marsupials have been discovered! One example is the Diprotodon, a giant wombat-like animal. These areas were also used by Aboriginal people a long time ago. Later, in the 1800s, they were used for market gardens and farms.

What's in a Name?

No one is completely sure how Edgars Creek got its name. The name was first used in 1853. Some people think it might be named after Francis Edgar. He was the second teacher at the Merri Creek Aboriginal School. Another idea is Edward Edgar. He was a well-known auctioneer in Port Phillip in the 1840s and 1850s.

Looking After the Creek

Much of Edgars Creek has been changed by people. Parts of it have been turned into an artificial channel. Some sections have concrete lining. A dam was also built at Edwardes Lake. However, there are plans to help the creek look more natural again. This will make it a better home for plants and animals.
