Edgemere is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the Rockaway Peninsula. This area stretches from Beach 32nd Street to Beach 52nd Street. Edgemere is home to Rockaway Community Park. To its west is Arverne, and to its east is Far Rockaway. Edgemere was started in 1892 by Frederick J. Lancaster. He first named it New Venice.

About Edgemere

Edgemere is part of Queens Community District 14. Its special mail code, called a ZIP Code, is 11691. The neighborhood is kept safe by the New York City Police Department's 101st Precinct.

A Look Back: Edgemere's History

Just like its neighbor Arverne, Edgemere was once a popular place for tourists. People came to enjoy the beach. It was easy to reach from Brooklyn and Manhattan by train.

From Resorts to Renewal

After World War II, the old hotels and small homes near the beach seemed out of date. City leaders decided to make big changes. By 1970, many buildings were taken down. This was part of a plan to improve the area. If you go east of Beach 32nd Street, you can still see how the area used to look. There are rows of small, one-story bungalows close together on narrow streets.

For many years, large parts of Edgemere and Arverne were empty. There were many ideas for new buildings, but nothing happened until after 1984.

Nature and New Beginnings

Even though Arverne has been rebuilt, the coastal part of Edgemere stayed undeveloped. But that changed in April 2024. The empty land became the 35-acre (14 ha) Arverne East Nature Preserve. This is a new public park for everyone to enjoy. A welcome building for the preserve was also built as part of the Arverne East project.
