The Edgemoor Farm Dairy Barn was built in 1913. It was part of a large dairy farm in Santee, California. This land was originally a Spanish land grant. It was given to Maria Antonio Estudillo. She married Miguel de Pedrorena from Madrid.
By the 1850s, parts of the land grant were sold. People started to farm on these sections. In 1913, Walter Hamlin Dupee bought Edgemoor Farm. He turned it into a very successful dairy farm. It won national awards. He also raised polo ponies there. It even became an early tourist spot. Dupee was a very important figure in dairy farming. In 1921, the Guernsey Breeders Association called his farm "the foremost authority and breeder in the U.S." He believed in using pure breeding stock. He also used modern equipment and scientific methods. Later, due to personal challenges, Dupee sold Edgemoor to Godfrey L. Strobeck.

From Dairy Farm to Care Home
After its time as a famous dairy farm, the County of San Diego bought Edgemoor. This happened in 1923. They wanted to use it as a home for elderly people and those in need. It was one of the last "poor farms" in the United States. These places helped people before programs like Social Security began. Social Security started after the Great Depression.
By the mid-1920s, Edgemoor cared for 520 people. Over the years, the County added new buildings. Apartments and wards were built in 1950. In 1953, the farm and dairy operations stopped. The County also planned to fix up the barn. Two years later, the place was renamed Edgemoor Geriatric Hospital.
Edgemoor as a Hospital
Many old buildings were torn down between 1957 and 1966. A new hospital building was built in 1966. The old milking barns were changed into living areas. All the original buildings from the Edgemoor Farm are now gone. This includes the Williamson Ranch House and the Dupee Ranch House. Other early structures, like the pony stables, are also gone. Some have been changed so much they are not recognizable. Only one building from Dupee's time remained. This was the Dutch gambrel roof barn, built in 1913.
Over time, there were challenges in caring for patients at Edgemoor Geriatric Hospital. This led to the decision to close it. A new hospital was planned to care for future patients. The new facility opened on January 23, 2009.
A Recognized Historic Site
On April 17, 1985, a formal request was sent to the National Park Service. It asked to register the Santee Barn as a historic site. On May 16, 1986, the Santee Barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical building. In the years that followed, the Barn's address changed. It moved from 9064 Edgemoor Drive to its current address at 9200 N. Magnolia Ave.
Santee Historical Society Museum
Today, the Santee Barn is an active museum. It is also the office for the Santee Historical Society. This was made possible with help from donations. Visitors can learn about the history of the area there.
