Edgerton Park is a beautiful public park that covers about 20 acres. It sits right on the border between the towns of New Haven and Hamden in Connecticut. It's a great place to visit and learn about history and nature!
This park used to be a private estate. In 1909, a rich businessman named Frederick F. Brewster built a large, fancy house here. He named his estate "Edgerton" because it was on the edge of town. The park's design, including its gardens and pathways, was created by Robert Storer Stephenson around the same time. After Mr. Brewster's wife passed away, the property was given to the city. The big house was taken down in 1964, but many other cool parts of the estate are still here for everyone to enjoy.
Edgerton Park is so special that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's an important historical site that should be protected.
What Can You See at Edgerton Park?
This 22-acre park has many interesting things to explore from its past as a grand estate. You can still see the original stone wall, the old greenhouses, the carriage house (where horses and carriages were kept), the gatehouse, and a charming bridge. There's also a big fountain that adds to the park's beauty.
The park is also home to community gardens where people can grow their own plants. Inside the Community Greenhouses, you'll find the Sarah T. Crosby Conservatory. This special place lets you explore different plant environments, like a rainforest with lush, green plants and a dry landscape with desert plants. You can also see many beautiful orchids there!
If you love theater, you might enjoy visiting in the summer. The Elm Shakespeare Company has been putting on outdoor plays in Edgerton Park every summer since 1995.
Who Helps Take Care of the Park?
Edgerton Park is kept beautiful thanks to a group called the Edgerton Park Conservancy. This is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers. They work hard to restore and maintain the park's buildings and grounds. They also offer fun and educational programs for schools and the community, especially in the conservatory. The Conservancy works closely with the city of New Haven, which owns the park.
Another special program at the greenhouse is G.R.O.W.E.R.S. This program helps adults with disabilities learn about horticulture (gardening) and offers plants for sale.
