Edgeton is a beautiful old house in Hamilton, Ohio, United States. It was built a long time ago, in the 1860s. The first people who lived here were important business owners in Hamilton. Because of its history, Edgeton has been named a special historic site.

Who Lived at Edgeton?

The very first owner of Edgeton was a man named Jacob Shaffer. He was a well-known banker in Hamilton. His office was right across the street from the courthouse downtown. Mr. Shaffer also had interests in a flour mill and the city's street railway system.

Jacob Shaffer was very involved in building the house himself. It was finished in 1865. He lived in Edgeton for eighteen years. In 1883, he sold the house to Harrison Leib.

Harrison Leib and the Edgeton Farm Dairy

Harrison Leib used to live in Cincinnati. He worked as a broker, which means he helped buy and sell things, for a company that dealt with sugar cane. Mr. Leib also owned a business called the Edgeton Farm Dairy. He liked the name so much that he decided to call his new house "Edgeton."

What Does Edgeton Look Like?

Edgeton is built mostly from brick, but it also has parts made of stone. The front of the house has a main porch. Around the front door, you can see windows with special covers called shutters.

Look up at the roof, and you'll see decorative brickwork called corbelling. This supports the cornice, which is a fancy molding along the edge of the roof. The house has two stories and is covered by a hip roof, which slopes down on all four sides.

The house is surrounded by large, open grounds. These grounds are designed to look like a beautiful park.

Why is Edgeton Important?

In 1975, Edgeton was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places that are important to American history. Edgeton was added because of its unique and important architecture.

Edgeton is one of sixteen places in Hamilton that are on this list. It's also one of more than eighty historic places in all of Butler County, Ohio.

The house is important partly because of where it is located. It is one of the most famous houses in western Hamilton. It helps define the look and feel of the neighborhood. This is true both because of its special design and its large, park-like grounds.
