Edir Macedo was born on February 18, 1945. He is a Brazilian evangelical bishop, writer, and businessman. He is best known as the founder of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). He also owns and leads Record, which is one of Brazil's largest television networks. He started Grupo Record in 1989 after buying the network.

Early Life

Edir Macedo was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was the fourth child of Henrique Bezerra and Eugenia de Macedo Bezerra. He studied theology, which is the study of religious beliefs.

In 1963, Edir Macedo started working for the government. He worked for the state lottery and later as a researcher.

He grew up Catholic, but in 1965, he became a Pentecostal. This happened after his sister invited him to a church.

In 1975, Macedo helped start a Pentecostal church called Cruzada do Caminho Eterno. Later, he and his partner went their separate ways.

In 1977, Macedo and others founded the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. This church started in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 1989, he bought the television network Record. He also started Grupo Record that same year. In 2007, he launched Record News, a 24-hour news channel.

His church grew very quickly. He teaches about prosperity theology. This belief suggests that faith can lead to financial success and well-being. His sermons often focus on helping people overcome their problems through faith.

From 2013 to 2015, Edir Macedo was listed on the Forbes billionaires list. He was recognized as a very wealthy pastor and businessman.

The UCKG built a large replica of Solomon's Temple in São Paulo. This building cost a lot of money. Stones for it were even brought from Jerusalem.

Edir Macedo is married to Ester Bezerra. They have two daughters, Cristiane and Viviane. They also have an adopted son named Moises.

Besides the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Edir Macedo leads several media companies. These include Record TV, RFTV, and Record News. He also owns Line Records and 64 radio stations under Rede Aleluia. Another company he leads is Universal Produções.

Books He Has Written

Edir Macedo has written many evangelical books. More than 10 million copies of his books have been sold. He has published over 34 different titles. Some popular books include Orixás, Caboclos and Guias and In the Footsteps of Jesus. Each of these sold over three million copies in Brazil. He also wrote a trilogy called Nada a perder (Nothing to Lose). Millions of copies of this series have been sold worldwide.

Movies About His Life

His broadcasting company, Record, helped make a movie in 2018. It was called Nada a perder (Nothing to Lose). The movie is based on his autobiography. Some people said the movie made his life seem too perfect. Tickets were sometimes given away for free at churches. This helped the movie become a box office success. A second movie was released in August 2019.
