Edit Kindvall (c.1909)

Edit Maria Kindvall (1866–1951) was a remarkable Swedish woman. She was a teacher, a talented photographer, and a strong supporter of women's rights. She worked hard to help women gain the right to vote, also known as suffrage. After teaching for many years, she trained as a photographer in 1901. She then opened her own photo studio in Storvik in 1902. In 1907, Edit started a local group in Storvik for the National Association for Women's Suffrage (LPKR). She later became a member of the main board for this important association. Kindvall was also active in politics, working with the Swedish People's Association and the Moderate Party.

Who Was Edit Kindvall?

Edit Maria Kindvall was born in Varberg, Sweden, on July 21, 1866. Her father, Karl Axel Kindvall, owned a bookshop. Her mother was Anna Charlotta Lindqvist. Edit was the third of five children in her family. When her father passed away in 1880, her mother moved the family to Linköping. However, Edit returned to Tranås, where she likely trained to become a teacher.

Edit's Journey as a Teacher

In 1886, Edit Kindvall began her teaching career in Finspång. She taught there until 1889. After spending another year in Tranås, she moved to Gothenburg. From 1895 to 1897, she taught in Stråtjära, a place in Hälsingland. After that, she worked as a governess, teaching children in their homes, in Sundsvall until 1901.

Becoming a Photographer

In 1901, Edit decided to try a new career: photography! She worked as an assistant with a photographer named Carl Berggren in Arbrå. The very next year, in 1902, she opened her own photography studio in Storvik. She ran this studio until about 1909. It seems she even opened another branch of her studio in Norberg.

Fighting for Women's Right to Vote

Edit Kindvall strongly believed that women should have the right to vote. In 1907, she started the Storvik branch of the Women's Suffrage Association. This group worked to get women the right to vote. She also attended many meetings about women's suffrage in different areas like Gästrikland, Dalarna, and Hälsingland. Edit wrote about these important activities in the journal of the Allmänna Valmansförbundet, which was a moderate political party. She was also very involved in this political party.

Edit Kindvall passed away in Stockholm on December 26, 1951. Her work as a teacher, photographer, and activist helped shape her community and country.
