Finspång: A Town with a Rich History
Finspång has always been an industrial town. The first factories started here in 1580. They were royal factories that made cannons and cannonballs. This industry continued for 300 years. It was managed by the Walloon and Dutch family De Geer.
Louis De Geer (1622–1695) built Finspång Castle. Around the castle, industries and a special garden called an orangery grew. This is how the town of Finspång developed.
In the late 1800s, a company called Bofors grew very big. Bofors first supplied metal parts to the Finspång factory. Later, they started making weapons. With help from Alfred Nobel, Bofors became very successful. By 1911, they had bought and closed down their main competitor in Finspång.
In 1913, a new factory called STAL was built in Finspång. It made turbines. The town had good metalworking facilities and skilled workers. In 1916, STAL became part of a larger company called ASEA.
Today, the main industries in Finspång are Siemens Energy. They still make turbines. Other companies also do metal processing.
Finspång was part of a rural area called Risinge until 1942. Then, it became a market town (köping). Since 1971, Finspång has been the main town of the larger Finspång Municipality.
