Norberg is a town in Sweden. It is located in Västmanland County. This town is also the main place of Norberg Municipality.

Norberg is famous for the Norbergfestival. This is Scandinavia's biggest electronic music festival. It takes place in an old iron ore mine.

The town has two main parts. There is Norberg in the south. In the north, you'll find Kärrgruvan, which means "Marsh Mine". There are also smaller villages nearby.

Norberg's Long History

Norberg has a very old past. People have lived here since the Stone Age. Making iron started as early as the 6th century.

Early Iron Making

A very old iron-making site is Lapphyttan. It was built around the 1100s or 1200s. This place shows how mining communities began in the Bergslagen area. In the Middle Ages, Norberg was a busy market. Miners from nearby areas would gather here.

Old Buildings and Fire

The oldest buildings in Norberg are near Norbergsån. This is the area around Norberg church. Some farms here are from the Middle Ages. Many current buildings are from the 1700s.

The oldest parts of Norberg's church are from the 1200s. This includes the arched ceilings. A big fire in 1727 changed the church inside. The church tower was rebuilt in 1904. There is also an old bone room from the 1700s in the cemetery.

A large fire happened in the mid-1700s. But you can still see how the town was first built. There were booths and wash-houses along the river. Farmhouses and homes were close by.

End of Iron Production

In the 1970s, raw melted iron was moved by train. It went from Spännarhyttan to a steel factory in Surahammar. The iron-making at Spännarhyttan stopped completely in 1981.

Famous Places to See

Norberg has some interesting landmarks.

Elsa Andersons Konditori

Elsa Andersons Konditori is a historic pastry shop. It used to be an inn. It opened in 1916. You can find it next to the town square. This shop has even won an award for its food. Sadly, a fire completely destroyed it in 2015. But it was rebuilt and reopened in 2017.
