Edith Cleaves Barry (1884–1969) was a talented American artist who created sculptures, paintings, illustrations, and designs. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Edith studied art at the famous Art Students League of New York in New York City. She learned from well-known artists like Frank DuMond and Richard E. Miller.

Edith Barry was also the person who started the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. She worked as its director from 1936 to 1945. In 1939, during a tough time called the Great Depression, the US government hired her. She painted a special mural for the post office in her hometown of Kennebunk, Maine. The mural was called The Arrival of the First Letter – Kennebunk Post Office from Falmouth – June 14, 1775.

Early Life and Art Training

Edith Barry was born on March 10, 1884, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Charles Dummer Barry and Ida Morton (Thompson) Barry. Her father, Charles, worked as an agent who helped import and export goods. He worked in Boston and later in New York City.

Edith grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. Her parents had strong connections to Kennebunk, Maine. They owned a family home there in the historic part of town.

Edith went to a special school called Miss Wheeler's School in Providence, Rhode Island. She finished school there in 1904.

Starting in 1906, Edith traveled to Europe every year to practice her art. She visited many places like Giverny, France; Rome, Italy; Austria; Spain; and London. She trained with American artists Frederick Carl Frieseke and Frederick William MacMonnies, who lived in France. Edith kept journals about her travels and art training. These journals are now kept at the Brick Store Museum.
