Edith Cohen (born May 21, 1966) is a computer scientist from both Israel and America. She is an expert in data mining and algorithms. These skills help her work with big data, which means very large sets of information.
She also studies how peer-to-peer networks work. These are computer networks where devices connect directly to each other. Today, she works at Google in California and teaches at Tel Aviv University in Israel.
Her School Days
Edith Cohen grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel. She went to Tel Aviv University and earned her first two degrees there. Later, she moved to the United States to study at Stanford University.
In 1991, she earned her Ph.D. (a very high degree) from Stanford. Her studies focused on solving complex problems using special computer methods.
Her Career and Research
Edith Cohen has worked at several important technology companies. She was a student researcher at IBM Research - Almaden. Then, she worked at Bell Labs and AT&T Labs for many years.
In 2012, she became a visiting professor at Tel Aviv University. She also worked at Microsoft Research. Since 2015, she has been working with Google. Her work helps design faster and smarter computer systems.
Awards and Honors
Edith Cohen has received special recognition for her work. In 2007, she won the William R. Bennett prize. She shared this award with David Applegate for their work on making computer networks more reliable.
In 2017, she was named an ACM Fellow. This is a big honor for computer scientists. She received it for her important contributions to designing efficient algorithms for networks and big data.
