Early Life and Studies
When Edith Elkind was in high school, she was very good at math! She even competed for the Estonian team in the International Mathematical Olympiads in 1992 and 1993. These are big international competitions where talented young math students from all over the world solve challenging problems.
She continued her studies and earned a master's degree from Moscow State University in 1998. Later, she completed her Ph.D. in 2005 at Princeton University. A Ph.D. is a very advanced university degree. For her Ph.D., she wrote a special research paper called a dissertation. Her dissertation was about "Computational Issues in Optimal Auction Design."
Academic Journey
After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Elkind worked as a postdoctoral researcher at several universities. These included the University of Warwick, the University of Liverpool, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A postdoctoral researcher is someone who does more research after getting their Ph.D.
She then became a lecturer at the University of Southampton and an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University. In 2013, she moved to Oxford, England, where she became a non-tutorial fellow at Balliol College, Oxford. She was given the special title of professor by Oxford University in 2016. In November 2024, she moved to Northwestern University in the United States, where she is now a professor.
Published Work
Books and Research
Edith Elkind is also an author! She wrote a book called Computational Aspects of Cooperative Game Theory in 2012. She wrote it with two other computer scientists, Georgios Chalkiadakis and Michael J. Wooldridge. This book helps explain how computers can be used to understand and solve problems where groups of people work together.
Honours and Recognition
Awards and Fellowships
Dr. Elkind has received special recognition for her work. She is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence. Being a "Fellow" means she is recognized as an expert and a leader in the field of artificial intelligence in Europe.
