Edith Elkind facts for kids
Edith Elkind is an Estonian computer scientist. She is a professor of Computer Science at Northwestern University in Evanston, USA. She is known for her work in algorithmic game theory and computational social choice. These are areas that use computers to understand games and how groups make decisions.
Her Journey in Computer Science
When Edith was in high school, she was very good at math. She even competed for the Estonian team in the International Mathematical Olympiads in 1992 and 1993. This is a big competition for the best young math students from around the world.
She went on to study computer science. She earned her master's degree from Moscow State University in 1998. Later, she completed her Ph.D. (a very high university degree) in 2005 from Princeton University. Her Ph.D. research was about how to design the best auctions using computers.
After finishing her Ph.D., she continued her research at several universities. These included the University of Warwick, the University of Liverpool, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She then became a teacher at the University of Southampton and an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University.
In 2013, she moved to Balliol College, Oxford in England. She became a full professor at Oxford in 2016. In November 2024, she moved to Northwestern University in the United States.
Books She Wrote
Edith Elkind also wrote a book with Georgios Chalkiadakis and Michael J. Wooldridge. The book is called Computational Aspects of Cooperative Game Theory and was published in 2012. It's about how computers can help us understand games where people work together.
Awards and Recognition
Edith Elkind is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence. This means she is recognized as an important expert in the field of artificial intelligence in Europe.
