Edith Martineau was born in Liverpool, England. Her father was Dr. James Martineau, a well-known religious leader.

Edith first studied art at the Liverpool School of Art. Later, her family moved to London. There, she continued her art education at Leigh's School of Art.

Her Art Career

Edith Martineau started showing her artwork early. In 1862, she submitted her paintings to the Royal Society of British Artists. She loved working with watercolour paints throughout her career.

She became a member of several groups for watercolour artists. In 1888, she was chosen as an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours. This was a special honor for artists who excelled in watercolour painting.

Exhibitions and Famous Works

Edith Martineau's art was shown at big events. She exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts. This was part of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. This was a huge world's fair.

One of her paintings, Potato Harvest, was created in 1888. It was later featured in a famous book. The book, called Women Painters of the World, was published in 1905. It celebrated the work of many female artists.

Later Life and Legacy

Edith Martineau passed away in Hampstead, London, when she was 66 years old. She was buried in the Martineau family grave. This grave is located in Highgate Cemetery in London. Her work continues to be remembered as an important part of British watercolour art.
