Edith Agnes Smith (born October 2, 1867 – died 1954) was a talented Canadian painter and teacher. She was a very important person in the art world of her time. Edith helped start the Maritime Art Association and even led the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts as its President.

About Edith Smith
Edith Agnes Smith was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 2, 1867. She was one of four children. Her father, Benjamin Smith, was a well-known merchant in Halifax.
Her Education in Art
Edith loved art from a young age. She studied art at the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax. To learn even more, she traveled to London, United Kingdom. There, she attended the Chelsea School of Art. She also studied at the Boston Art Club in Boston, Massachusetts.
Working for Art in Halifax
When Edith returned to Halifax, she became very active in the local art community. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts. She worked hard to help the museum find a permanent home. Edith also helped gather artworks for the museum's collection. She helped collect pieces by artists like Frances Jones Bannerman and Arthur Lismer.
Teaching and Exhibiting Art
From 1915 to 1950, Edith Smith shared her knowledge. She taught art at the Halifax Ladies' College. This school is now known as Armbrae Academy.
Edith also showed her own artwork often. She exhibited her paintings at several important places. These included the Nova Scotia Society of Artists and the Maritime Art Association. Her art was also shown at the National Gallery of Canada.
Edith Smith passed away in 1954. She died in Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia.
