This publishing house became one of the top publishers in Romania. They focused on children's literature, fantasy literature, and science fiction.
Editura Ion Creangă published many classic children's books. They translated these books into Romanian. Some of their most popular books included all the works by Jules Verne. They also published J. R. R. Tolkien's famous book, The Hobbit.
The company was also known for its amazing book illustrations. They worked with many talented artists. Some of these well-known artists included Sandu Florea, Val Munteanu, Lívia Rusz, and Eugen Taru.
Challenges and End
During the later years of communist rule, the government controlled what could be published. This was called censorship.
In 1988, Editura Ion Creangă published poems by Ana Blandiana. These poems hinted at problems with the communist system. Because of this, the country's leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu, personally ordered strict actions against the publishing house.
Editura Ion Creangă continued after the Romanian Revolution of 1989. This revolution ended communist rule in Romania. However, the company found it hard to compete with new publishing companies. It eventually stopped its work in 2003.
