Military Career and Family Titles
Edmond Butler became a Major in the army in 1689. He served in a special group called Colonel Edward Butler's Regiment of Horse. This army fought for King James II of England. Edmond Butler was part of a big battle called the Battle of Aughrim, where he sadly lost his life.
Edmond's older brother, Edward, became the second Viscount Galmoye in 1653, taking over the title from their grandfather. Edward's son, the third Viscount, faced a challenge in 1697. He was considered a Jacobite, which meant he supported King James II even after he was no longer king. Because of this, his title and lands were taken away, a process called being "attainted."
Much later, in 1826, the direct family line of Edward ended. Edmond Butler's great-great-great-grandson, named Garret Butler, asked for the family's noble title, the viscountcy, to be given back. He also asked for the "attainder" to be reversed. Important legal officials in Ireland agreed that Garret would be the rightful heir if the title was restored. However, to get the title back, a special law had to be passed by the Parliament. Even though this law wasn't passed, Garret Butler started using the title Viscount Galmoy.
