History of the Mall
How it Started
The area where Edmonton City Centre now stands began to develop in 1974. At first, it included office buildings like the City Centre Place office tower. More buildings were added over the next few years.
Two Malls Become One
For a while, there were two separate malls: Eaton Centre and Edmonton Centre. In 1999, the Eaton's department store closed down. After this, the two malls were joined together. They became one big shopping complex. A new, larger pedestrian bridge was built to connect them. This bridge goes over 101 Street and even has some shops inside!
Movie Theatre Changes
The movie theatre inside the mall has also changed names. On June 27, 2013, Empire Theatres announced they would sell this location. It then became a Landmark Cinemas theatre on October 31, 2013.
Mall Upgrades
In November 2015, Edmonton City Centre announced a big plan to make the mall even better. They decided to move and improve their food court. This project cost a lot of money and aimed to make the whole mall feel new. The new food court opened on November 1, 2016. The entire renovation project was finished by November 2017. The old food court area was turned into parking space.
Main Stores (Anchors)
"Anchors" are the biggest stores in a mall. They help attract many shoppers. Edmonton City Centre has four main anchor stores:
- Hudson's Bay (167,946 sq ft (15,602.7 m2))
- Landmark Cinemas (66,692 sq ft (6,195.9 m2))
- Sport Chek (35,825 sq ft (3,328.3 m2))
- Winners (28,539 sq ft (2,651.4 m2))
Office Buildings
Edmonton City Centre is not just for shopping. It also has two office towers and another unique office building. These are called TD Tower, Oxford Tower, and Centre Point Place. All these office buildings are connected to the mall by special walkways called pedways. Together, they offer a lot of office space, with towers reaching up to 28 floors high.
CBC in the Mall
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has its English and French offices in Edmonton right at Edmonton City Centre. The CBC is Canada's public broadcaster. This means that TV stations like CBXT-DT and CBXFT-DT are based here. Radio stations like CBX, CBX-FM, and CHFA-FM also operate from this location.
