Who Was Edmund Mills?
Edmund James Mills was born in London on December 8, 1840. He went to school in Cheltenham. Later, he studied chemistry at the Royal School of Mines and the Royal College of Chemistry in London.
He worked very hard and earned his first university degree in 1863. Then, he got a higher degree, called a doctorate, in 1865. In 1874, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important honor for scientists in the United Kingdom.
Life as a Professor
Around 1876, Edmund Mills moved to Glasgow, Scotland. He became a Professor of Chemistry there. He taught many students, including a famous chemist named Arthur George Perkin.
In 1891, while working at the Royal College of Science and Technology in Glasgow, he made an important discovery. He created a new kind of disinfectant. A disinfectant is a chemical that kills germs and helps keep things clean.
The Invention of Parozone
Edmund Mills named his new product "Parozone." This invention changed how people cleaned their homes in Britain. Parozone was used to clean clothes and to disinfect kitchens and bathrooms. It made daily life much more hygienic.
By 1911, the Parozone Company was very successful. It had its main office in Glasgow City Centre.
Edmund Mills passed away at his home in Acton, London, on April 21, 1921. He was a Buddhist throughout his life.
Years later, in 1963, the Parozone Company was bought by another company called Jeyes Fluid. However, the popular "Parozone" name was kept.
