Edmund Blair Leighton (born September 21, 1852 – died September 1, 1922) was a famous English painter. He was known for his beautiful paintings that showed scenes from history. He especially loved to paint about the Regency era (a time in British history around the early 1800s) and the Middle Ages (a long time ago, from about the 5th to the 15th century).
About Edmund Leighton
Edmund Leighton was born in London, England. His father, Charles Blair Leighton, was also an artist. Edmund went to University College School until he was 15. After that, he worked for a tea merchant.
But Edmund really wanted to study art! So, he took evening classes in South Kensington. Then, he went to Heatherley's School in London. When he was 21, he joined the Royal Academy Schools, which is a very famous art school.
At first, Edmund drew black and white pictures for magazines like Cassell's Magazine. He also illustrated a book called Book of British Ballads. His first painting shown at the Royal Academy was called A Flaw in the Title in 1874. It sold for £200, which was a lot of money back then! After this, he mostly painted with oil on canvas.
In 1885, he married Katherine Nash. They had a son, E. J. Blair Leighton, who also became a painter, and a daughter. Edmund showed his paintings at the Royal Academy every year until 1920.
Edmund Leighton was a very careful artist. He made detailed and beautiful historical paintings. His artworks often showed romantic scenes of knights, chivalry, and women in medieval clothes. People really liked his paintings. Even though he showed his art at the Royal Academy for over 40 years, he never became a full member.
