Edmund Niziurski (born July 10, 1925 – died October 9, 2013) was a super popular Polish writer. He wrote many funny books and stories especially for young readers. He even received the Order of the Smile, which is a special award given by children!
Growing Up in Poland
Edmund Niziurski was born on July 10, 1925, in Kielce, Poland. He grew up in a regular family with two younger siblings. He started middle school in Kielce.
But his schooling was stopped in 1939. This happened because of the German and Soviet attack on Poland. His family had to leave their home.
They went to Hungary as refugees. There, young Edmund even taught French to others. He returned to Poland in 1940. He spent the rest of the war in a village called Jeleniec.
He worked in a factory during this time. He also went to a secret high school. He finished high school in 1943. After the war ended, he studied law at two different universities.
Becoming a Writer
Edmund Niziurski first worked as a history teacher. He taught at an adult middle school in Kielce. But he soon left this job because the pay was too low.
His time as a teacher helped him a lot. It gave him ideas for stories about students. He started writing poems in 1944. These were published in a magazine called Biuletyn Informacyjny.
He soon realized he was great at writing for young people. He started working with kids' magazines. These included Płomyczek and Świat Młodych. He also wrote radio plays for Polish Radio.
Niziurski lived in Kielce and then Katowice. In 1952, he moved to Warsaw. He worked as a journalist for a while. But he kept writing his own books at the same time.
His Popular Books
Edmund Niziurski's books for kids and teens became very famous. His novels for adults were not as well-known. In 1975, he received the Order of the Smile. This award is given by children themselves.
In 2008, he got another award. It was the Medal for Merit to Culture - Gloria Artis. This shows how important his work was.
Niziurski wrote exciting and funny stories. They were often about the daily life of teenagers at school. But his books also had thrilling parts. Later, he even added science-fiction ideas.
He wrote about 13 or 14-year-olds. But he gave them the minds of slightly older boys. He wanted his readers to learn and grow from his characters. He taught them in a very clever way.
Edmund Niziurski passed away in 2013. He was 88 years old. He died in Warsaw, Poland.
