Edmund Scarborough (born May 1840) was an important person in Mississippi history. He was a minister, a farmer, and a state legislator. This means he helped make laws for the state. He represented Holmes County, Mississippi in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1870 to 1871.

Early Life and Freedom

Edmund Scarborough was born in May 1840 in Greene County, Alabama. At that time, he was born into slavery. This means he was not free to live his own life. However, he gained his freedom in 1863. This was a very important moment for him. Some records spell his name a little differently, like Edmond or Edward Scarborough.

Family and Community Work

In 1857, Edmund Scarborough married Martha. They lived together in Holmes County, Mississippi, for many years. Records from 1900 and 1910 show them living there.

Edmund Scarborough was also very active in his community. In 1866, he and his brother-in-law built the first Methodist church for African Americans in their county. This was a big step for the community.

Serving in Politics

Edmund Scarborough became a state legislator. He served in the Mississippi House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the state. He worked alongside other representatives from Holmes County, like William B. Williams and Cicero Mitchell.

In 1875, he also took on another role. At a meeting for the Republican Party in Holmes County, he was chosen as a "Cotton Weigher." This job involved checking the weight of cotton, which was a very important crop back then.

Later Life and Church Leadership

After his time in the state legislature, Edmund Scarborough continued his important work. He became a Deacon Elder in his church. As a Deacon Elder, he was a leader in his church community. It is said that he baptized about 500 people during his time as a minister.

Edmund Scarborough lived until at least 1912. At that time, he owned several properties and lots in the city. The exact year he passed away is not known.
