Sir Edmund Stockdale (born April 16, 1903 – died March 24, 1989) was an important English banker. He also held a special position as the Lord Mayor of London from 1959 to 1960. This role is a very old and respected job in the city.

Early Life and Family

Edmund Stockdale was born on April 16, 1903. His father was Henry Stockdale and his mother was Florence Villiers. He grew up at a family home called Mears Ashby Hall. His family had owned this house since the mid-1600s. Edmund went to Wellington College for his education. In 1937, he married Louise Fermor-Hesketh. Her father was Sir Thomas Fermor-Hesketh.

Banking Career and Public Service

Edmund Stockdale started working at the Bank of England in 1921. This is the central bank of the United Kingdom. By 1948, he became a deputy principal at the bank. In the same year, he also became a Justice of the Peace for the City of London. A Justice of the Peace is a person who helps keep law and order in their local area.

In 1955, Edmund Stockdale was given the title of "Sir" (knighted). This was to recognize his important work in banking. Later, in 1959, he was chosen to be the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very old and important role. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation. They represent the city and its businesses.

On December 5, 1960, Queen Elizabeth II gave him another special title. He became the first Baronet of Hoddington. This is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family.
