Edna McGriff (born December 16, 1935 – died March 1980) was an American rhythm and blues singer and talented pianist. She became famous in the 1950s. Edna had a big hit song called "Heavenly Father" in 1952. This song was very popular on the US Billboard R&B music chart. It sold over 500,000 copies, which is a huge success!

Edna McGriff's Musical Journey

Edna McGriff was born in Tampa, Florida, in the United States. She went to Washington Irving High School in New York.

Early Recordings and First Hit

Edna released her very first song, "Note Droppin' Papa," in September 1951. She worked with Bennie Green's band for this song. Later that year, she recorded "Heavenly Father" with Buddy Lucas and His Band of Tomorrow. Edna was only 16 years old at the time!

"Heavenly Father" came out in early 1952 and quickly became a hit. It reached number 4 on the US R&B chart. Many other artists, like Fran Warren and The Four Lads, also recorded their own versions of "Heavenly Father."

Performing and Collaborations

Edna McGriff performed on stage at the Earle Theater in Philadelphia. She also appeared in many shows with famous DJ Alan Freed. In June 1952, Edna recorded six duets with Sonny Til from the group The Orioles. These songs included "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Once in a While."

Later Career and Legacy

After her big hit, Edna released more songs like "Pray For A Better World" and "Edna's Blues." She recorded with several different record labels, including Josie Records and Bell Records. Even though she didn't have more chart hits, she continued to record. She even made a new version of "Heavenly Father" in 1961.

Edna McGriff passed away in March 1980 when she was 44 years old. In August 2012, a special collection of her recordings was released. This album, called Start Movin' in My Direction, helped new fans discover her music.
