Eduard Spranger (born June 27, 1882 – died September 17, 1963) was an important German philosopher and psychologist. He was born in Berlin and passed away in Tübingen. Spranger was a student of Wilhelm Dilthey.
He was known as a humanist. This means he believed in the value and importance of humans. Spranger created a special way of teaching, called philosophical pedagogy. He did this to protect his ideas against the popular psychology of his time, which focused a lot on experiments.
Spranger wrote a famous book called Lebensformen, which means Types of Men. This book was very popular, selling 28,000 copies by 1920. In his book, Spranger suggested that different types of human life are like structures in our minds. He thought that personality types have a biological basis. However, he also believed they couldn't be fully explained by biology alone. He felt that our minds are influenced by bigger ideas and values, not just basic survival.
Understanding People: Spranger's Six Types
Eduard Spranger looked at personalities based on six main ideas or values. He called these "types" of personality traits. These ideas help us understand what motivates different people.
Spranger's ideas on personality are explained in his book Types of Men. He described six main value attitudes:
- The Theoretical: People with this type love to discover truth. They enjoy learning, analyzing, and organizing information. They are always searching for knowledge.
- The Economic: This type is interested in what is useful. They want to make sure their time, money, and resources are used wisely. They look for practical results from their efforts.
- The Aesthetic: For this type, the highest value is form and harmony. They love beauty and art. They want to experience the world in a way that feels balanced and complete.
- The Social: People of this type value the love of people most. They are passionate about helping others. They enjoy investing their time and energy to help friends and family reach their goals.
- The Political: This type is mainly interested in power. They want to achieve a position where they can influence and lead others. They enjoy having an impact on the world around them.
- The Religious: The highest value for this type is unity. They seek a deeper meaning in life, often through spiritual or ideal beliefs. They look for a system that helps them understand the world and their place in it.
