Eduardo Balaca y Orejas-Canseco (born around 1840, died 1914) was a talented Spanish artist. He was known for painting people's faces (a portrait painter), creating beautiful decorations, and teaching art. His brother, Ricardo Balaca, was also a famous painter, known for battle scenes.

A Young Artist's Journey

Eduardo Balaca was born in Madrid, the capital of Spain. His father, José Balaca, was also a painter who specialized in portraits and tiny, detailed pictures called miniatures.

When Eduardo was young, his family moved to Lisbon, Portugal. They had to leave Spain because of political problems at the time. By 1852, when Eduardo was about 12 years old, his family returned to Madrid.

Learning to Paint

Eduardo's first art lessons came from his father, who was his first teacher. Later, he went to a famous art school in Madrid called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. His brother, Ricardo, also joined him there later to study art.

Famous Works and Exhibitions

Eduardo Balaca often showed his paintings in art shows. He earned special recognition at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1864 and again in 1867. These were important events for artists in Spain.

What He Painted

Some of his most well-known paintings include portraits of famous people who had already passed away. He painted Miguel de Cervantes, a very famous Spanish writer, and Pedro Rodríguez, Count of Campomanes, an important Spanish statesman. He also painted scenes from the life of Saint Teresa, a well-known Spanish saint.

Eduardo also created a large painting called "Allegory of Philosophy" for the Ateneo de Madrid, which is a cultural and scientific institution. He worked with his brother Ricardo on a project for the Iglesia del Buen Suceso church, where they painted figures of Saints Mark and Matthew.

Eduardo Balaca stopped painting for several years before he passed away in Madrid.
