Vice Admiral Edward Allen Burkhalter, Jr. (September 15, 1928 – July 1, 2020) was a brave and important leader in the United States Navy. He was known for his work in submarines and later in intelligence, helping to keep the country safe.
Who Was Edward Burkhalter?
Edward Burkhalter was born in Roanoke, Alabama, in 1928. He went to the United States Naval Academy, a special school for future Navy officers. He graduated from there in 1951.
Admiral Burkhalter spent most of his early Navy career working on submarines. These are special ships that travel underwater. Later, for the last 10 years of his career, he focused on something called intelligence. This means gathering and understanding important information to protect the country.
He held many important jobs in intelligence. He was the Chief of Naval Intelligence, which means he was in charge of all intelligence for the Navy. He also worked at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). These are important groups that help the United States understand what is happening around the world.

Admiral Burkhalter received many special honors for his great work. These included the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. These awards are given to military members who show outstanding service and achievement. He also earned badges that showed he was a skilled submarine officer.
