Edward Cranfield was an English colonial administrator who lived in the late 1600s. He was known for his time as governor of New Hampshire.

Edward Cranfield: A Colonial Governor

Edward Cranfield served as the governor of the Province of New Hampshire from 1682 to 1685. His time as governor was quite challenging. There was a lot of disagreement and tension between him and the people living in the colony. This period was marked by significant differences in opinion and approach.

Life in Barbados

After leaving New Hampshire in 1685, Cranfield moved to Barbados. There, he took on a new role as a commissioner of customs. This meant he was in charge of collecting taxes on goods that were imported or exported. He introduced a 4.5% tax on sugar exports, which was a significant product from Barbados at the time. Cranfield also served on the council in Barbados during the 1690s. He passed away around the year 1700 and was buried in Bath Cathedral.
