Edward Daniel DiPrete (born July 8, 1934) is an American politician. He was the 70th Governor of Rhode Island, serving from 1985 to 1991. He is known as the only Rhode Island governor who went to prison for actions related to his time in office.

Early Life and Public Service

Edward DiPrete was born in Cranston, Rhode Island. He went to the College of the Holy Cross. He also received special degrees from several universities.

DiPrete began his public service in his hometown. From 1970 to 1974, he was part of the Cranston School Committee. This group helps make decisions for local schools.

Later, he served on the Cranston City Council from 1974 to 1978. He was an "at-large" member, meaning he represented the whole city.

He then became the mayor of Cranston. He served as mayor from 1978 until 1985.

Governor of Rhode Island

DiPrete became the 70th Governor of Rhode Island in 1985. He served for three terms, each lasting two years. His time as governor ended in 1991.

In the 1990 election, he ran for governor again. However, he lost to Bruce Sundlun. Sundlun had run against DiPrete twice before.

After his time as governor, DiPrete faced legal issues. In 1998, he admitted to some charges related to his time in office. He was sentenced to a year in prison. He served eleven months in the Adult Correctional Institutions.

His state retirement pension was taken away. However, the state Supreme Court later said his wife could try to get her share of the pension benefits.

Personal Life

Edward DiPrete was known for being a friendly, down-to-earth person. He sometimes served fried chicken to guests in his motor home.

He even parked his motor home outside the Rhode Island State House during a big snowstorm in 1987. This helped him get to work easily despite the heavy snow.

DiPrete also had a Pac-Man arcade game at his house. In 1989, he showed the game to President George H. W. Bush.

Edward DiPrete and his wife, Patricia, had seven children. Patricia passed away in 2011. DiPrete lived in Cranston for many years. In 2016, he moved to an apartment in the Garden City area of Cranston.
