The Edward Gorey House, also known as the Elephant House, is a special home on Cape Cod. This is where Edward Gorey, a famous author, illustrator, puppeteer, and playwright, lived and worked. He lived there from 1986 until he passed away in 2000. Today, the house is a museum. It celebrates Gorey's life and all the amazing things he created.
Edward Gorey deeply cared about animals, especially cats. The museum often has activities and exhibits that show his love for animals. These activities also support groups that help animals.
Exploring the Edward Gorey House
Edward Gorey loved to collect all sorts of items. He even picked up discarded objects he found by the road. He would arrange these items on his porch and inside the rooms of his house. He also had a very large collection of books. His library was always overflowing with them!
The Elephant House is also special because of a huge tree in its yard. This tree is a southern magnolia. These trees usually do not grow so far north. It is a unique sight to see in Massachusetts.
Gallery of the House and Art
The museum has a special display. It shows the Edward Gorey binding project. This project highlights his unique art style.
Keeping the House Alive
In 2002, a group called the Highland Street Foundation gave a grant. This money helped buy the house. It also allowed the museum to be created. Thanks to this, people can still visit and learn about Edward Gorey today.
