Edward Haytley's Paintings
Not many of Edward Haytley's paintings still exist today. He often painted a special type of picture called a 'conversation piece'. These were popular in England in the mid-1700s, especially among wealthy families. A conversation piece showed a group of people, often a family, with their large country estates in the background. It made the family look important and showed off their beautiful homes.
Some of his famous conversation pieces include:
- A painting of Elizabeth Robinson with her parents-in-law, Edward and Elizabeth Montagu. This picture was painted in 1744 at their home, Sandleford Priory.
- Six paintings of the Stanley family. One of these, from 1746, shows Sir Robert and Lady Bradshaigh in front of their home, Haigh Hall.
- Two paintings of the Brockman family at their estate in Kent, called Beachborough. Both of these pictures show a new pond that had just been built there. One of these paintings might even include Susanna Highmore, whose father was also a famous portrait painter.
Edward Haytley also painted many regular portraits of single people.
Paintings for Hospitals
Some of his most well-known works are two round oil paintings from 1746. These paintings show the Bethlem Hospital and the Chelsea Hospital. Haytley gave these paintings to the Foundling Hospital in London. The Foundling Hospital was a famous charity that cared for abandoned children. Many artists, including Haytley, donated their artwork to help the hospital. Because he donated his work, Haytley was chosen to be a governor (a leader) of the hospital.
His last known painting was a portrait of Sir William Milner, painted in 1764. It is thought that Edward Haytley died around this time.
