A Heroic Moment in France
On January 27, 1917, when he was 23 years old, Sergeant Mott showed incredible courage. His army company was attacking near Le Transloy, France. But they were stopped by heavy machine-gun fire from an enemy strong-point.
Even though he was badly hurt in the eye, Sergeant Mott didn't give up. He bravely rushed towards the machine gun. After a tough fight, he captured the enemy gunner and took the machine gun. Because of his quick thinking and daring actions, his company's attack on the left side was successful. This amazing act of bravery earned him the Victoria Cross.
