Edward Walter "Ed" Jones (born March 11, 1950 – died December 14, 2012) was an important politician from North Carolina. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Ed Jones served in the North Carolina Senate. There, he represented the 4th Senate district. This district included several counties like Bertie, Halifax, and Hertford.
Before becoming a senator, Ed Jones had a long career in public service. He served in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. After his military service, he went to Western Piedmont Community College. He earned a degree in police science. For 30 years, he worked as a state trooper. He was part of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Later, after retiring, he became the chief of police in his hometown, Enfield, North Carolina.
Ed Jones's Political Journey
Ed Jones started his political career in his local community. He was elected as the Mayor of Enfield. In 2005, he got a chance to serve in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He was chosen to fill a spot that became empty. This happened after state Representative John D. Hall passed away.
Voters in the 7th district then elected him to a full term. This district covered Halifax and Nash counties. This election happened in November 2006.
Moving to the Senate
Soon after his election to the House, another important event happened. State Senator Robert L. Holloman died. Local leaders from the Democratic Party chose Ed Jones to take Senator Holloman's place. This happened on January 18, 2007.
Because of this new opportunity, Jones resigned from his House seat right away. Governor Mike Easley then officially appointed him to the Senate on January 23. After Jones moved to the Senate, Angela R. Bryant was appointed to fill his old seat in the House.
Ed Jones was very popular in the Senate. He was elected and re-elected multiple times. He won elections in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Sadly, about a month after winning his last term in 2012, he passed away at 62 years old. He died in Halifax County, North Carolina after an illness.
To honor his service, a part of US Highway 301 was renamed. This five-mile section goes through the town of Enfield. It is now called the "Senator Edward W. Jones Highway." This renaming happened in March 2018.
