Edward and Charlotte married when he was 14 and she was 13. They had a very large family with 18 children. Edward Lee was a strong supporter of the Tory party. He also stayed loyal to King James II, even after the King left London in 1688.

About Edward Henry Lee
His Early Life
Edward Lee was the son of Sir Francis Henry Lee, 4th Baronet. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Pope. She later married Robert Bertie, 3rd Earl of Lindsey. Edward's family was well-known and connected to other important people.
When he was young, people thought Edward was kind and charming. He was also seen as strong and intelligent. Because of his high social standing, some people also found him a bit arrogant.
His Royal Marriage

Edward Lee was made the Earl of Lichfield in 1674. He was only eleven years old at the time. This special title was given to him because he was going to marry a daughter of King Charles II.
His future wife was Lady Charlotte Fitzroy. She was one of the King's children with his partner, the Duchess of Cleveland. Charlotte was known for being sweet and beautiful. Her father, the King, loved her very much.
Edward and Charlotte were promised to each other when she was nine and he was eleven. About three years later, they got married. Edward was fourteen and Charlotte was thirteen. The wedding took place on 6 February 1677.
Public Service and Military Role
From 1687 to 1689, Edward Lee served as the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. This was an important role, representing the King in that county. He was also in charge of a group of soldiers called Lichfield's Regiment. This was an infantry regiment in the English Army.
However, he was removed from his command after the Glorious Revolution. This happened because he was believed to support King James II. His regiment later fought in the Williamite War in Ireland.
