Early Years and Royal Connections
Lady Charlotte Lee was born on March 23, 1678, in St. James's Park, London, England. She was the eldest of many children born to Edward Henry Lee, 1st Earl of Lichfield and Lady Charlotte Fitzroy. Lady Charlotte Fitzroy was a daughter of King Charles II and Lady Barbara Villiers.
Her mother was quite young when she married the Earl of Lichfield and when Charlotte was born. Her father was also very young at the time of her birth. Charlotte's paternal grandparents were Sir Francis Henry Lee of Ditchley and Elizabeth Pope.
Marriage to Lord Baltimore
On January 2, 1699, when she was twenty years old, Charlotte married her first husband, Benedict Calvert, 4th Baron Baltimore. He was the son of Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore and Jane Lowe.
Charlotte became known as Lady Baltimore in February 1715. This happened when her husband inherited the title of 4th Baron Baltimore after his father passed away. The Calvert family had previously lost their right to govern the Province of Maryland during a time of political change. However, this right was restored to Charlotte and Benedict's son, Charles Calvert, after Benedict's death on April 16, 1715.
Charlotte and Lord Baltimore had six children:
- Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore (September 29, 1699 – April 24, 1751). He became the 18th Proprietor Governor of Maryland. Charles married Mary Janssen and they had three children. He also had a son, Benedict Swingate Calvert, who later lived in Maryland.
- Hon. Benedict Leonard Calvert (1700–1731). He served as Governor of Maryland. He passed away on June 1, 1732, while traveling back to England.
- Hon. Edward Henry Calvert (born around 1700). He held important roles in Maryland, including Commissary General.
- Hon. Charlotte Calvert (died December 1744). She married Thomas Breerwood and they had a son, Francis.
- Hon. Jane Calvert (died July 1778). She married John Hyde and they had three children.
- Hon. Cecil Calvert (born 1702).
Charlotte and Lord Baltimore separated in 1705. In 1711, Lord Baltimore began legal proceedings to end their marriage and arrange financial agreements. The House of Lords, which handled important family and property matters, oversaw this process.
A Second Marriage: Christopher Crowe
Lady Baltimore married her second husband, Christopher Crowe, on August 13, 1715. Christopher Crowe was a diplomat who served as Consul at Leghorn.
This marriage brought four more children into Charlotte's family:
- Christopher Crowe (1716–1776). He married Barbara Duncombe.
- Catherine Crowe (1717–1782). She married Roger Henry Gale.
- Charlotte Crowe (1718–1742).
- George Crowe (November 25, 1719 – October 10, 1782). He married Anne Swift and they had a son named Robert.
