Who Was Edward Lively?

Edward Lively was a very smart person who loved learning about languages, especially ancient ones like Hebrew and Latin. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, which is a famous university in England. He became a Fellow there, meaning he was a senior member of the college.

His Important Role at Cambridge

From 1575 until his death in 1605, Edward Lively held a special job called the Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge University. This meant he was the main teacher and expert in the Hebrew language at the university. Hebrew is the language in which much of the Old Testament of the Bible was originally written.

Lively's Published Works

Besides teaching, Edward Lively also wrote books. He wrote explanations in Latin for some parts of the Bible, specifically about the minor prophets. He also wrote a book about the timeline of the kings of Persia, which showed his knowledge of history and ancient cultures.

Working on the King James Bible

Edward Lively played a very active part in the early plans for the King James Version of the Bible. This was a huge project to translate the Bible into English so that more people could read and understand it. It became one of the most important English translations of the Bible ever made.

A Delay in the Project

Sadly, Edward Lively became very ill and passed away in May 1605. His death, caused by a serious throat infection, was a big loss. It is said that his passing caused a significant delay in starting the work on the King James Bible because he was such a key person in the project.

His Family After His Death

Edward Lively left behind eleven children. After his death, his wife had to care for them. They received some support from his church position at Peterborough and also from a kind person named William Barlow, who was his patron and helped his family.
