Madden traveled a lot in India during the 1820s and 1830s. He was fascinated by the plants he found there. He believed some plants had connections to stories from the Bible. Later, he went on more trips with Dr. Hugh Falconer. They often started their plant expeditions from a place called Saharunpore. Madden also became friends with two brothers, Henry and Richard Strachey, who were also explorers.

In 1849, Madden retired from his work in India. He moved to Edinburgh, a city in Scotland. He lived in a beautiful old house at 26 Regent Terrace, which is on Calton Hill.

In 1853, Edward Madden was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very important group for scientists and thinkers. John Fleming, another famous naturalist, suggested him for this honor. Madden also became the President of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh from 1855 to 1856. This shows how much he was respected in the world of plant science.

He passed away in Edinburgh in 1856.
