He showed leadership skills and was promoted several times. On January 30, 1862, he became a Major. Later, on April 9, 1865, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

After the war, McAlexander continued to serve his community, but this time in politics. From 1865 to 1867, he was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. This meant he helped make laws and decisions for the state of Alabama.

Edward McAlexander was married during his life. His first wife was Elizabeth J. Koger, and his second wife was Sarah A. Koger. He passed away on October 13, 1870, in Lauderdale County, Alabama. He was buried in the Florence Cemetery in Florence, Alabama.
