Edward Montagu (born around 1562, died 1644) was an important English politician. He was also known as Sir Edward Montagu of Boughton Castle. He became the first Baron Montagu of Boughton. He was a Knight of the Bath (KB), which is a special honor given by the King.

Edward Montagu's Early Life and Career

Edward Montagu was the son of Sir Edward Montagu. He went to Christ Church, Oxford university around 1574. He finished his studies in 1579. Later, he studied law at the Middle Temple in 1580. When his father passed away in 1602, Edward took over his family's estates.

Serving in Parliament

Edward Montagu was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. An MP is a person chosen to represent an area in the country's government.

  • In 1584, he became an MP for Bere Alston.
  • In 1597, he represented Tavistock.
  • In 1601, he was an MP for Brackley.

King James I made him a Knight of the Bath in 1603. This was during the King's special crowning ceremony. Edward also served as the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire from 1595 to 1596. A High Sheriff was a royal official in charge of law and order in a county.

Later Political Life

Edward Montagu played a part in creating what we now call Guy Fawkes Night. He helped pass a law in Parliament in 1605 to remember the Gunpowder Plot. This plot was a plan to blow up the Parliament building.

He was elected as an MP for Northamptonshire again in 1614 and 1621. In 1621, he was given the special title of Baron Montagu of Boughton. This made him a peer, a high-ranking noble.

Supporting the King

During the English Civil War, Edward Montagu supported King Charles I. Because of this, he was arrested in 1642. He was held in the Tower of London for a while. Due to his health, he was moved to the Savoy Hospital. He passed away in 1644 while still a prisoner. He was buried in Weekley.
