Life as a Noble Knight
Edward Montagu was the youngest son of William Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu. His mother was Elizabeth Montfort. He had three brothers and seven sisters. One of his brothers was William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury, who was also a very important person. Another brother, Simon Montacute, became a Bishop of Worcester and later a Bishop of Ely.
In 1337, King Edward III gave Edward Montagu a special payment of £100 each year. This money helped him support his life as a knight.
Edward's first wife was Alice of Norfolk. She was the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton and the granddaughter of King Edward I. In 1339, King Edward III made sure that Alice received her share of her father's lands. This was a common practice for noble families.
Military Service and Parliament
Edward Montagu was a brave knight. He fought in the Battle of Crecy in 1346. This was a major battle during the Hundred Years' War between England and France.
From 1348 to 1360, Edward was called to join the Parliament. This meant he was asked to advise the King and help make important decisions for the country. When he was called to Parliament, he became known as Lord Montagu.
Edward Montagu passed away on July 14, 1361. His burial place is not known.
