Alice of Norfolk, also known as Alice of Brotherton, was an important English noblewoman who lived in the 1300s. She was born around 1324 and passed away in 1352. Alice was the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton and the granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu.

Alice's Early Life and Family

Alice of Norfolk was likely born around 1324. Her father was Thomas of Brotherton. He was the eldest son of King Edward I from his second marriage to Margaret of France. Margaret was the daughter of King Philippe III of France.

Alice's mother was Alice de Hales. She was the daughter of Sir Roger de Hales. Alice had an older brother named Edward of Norfolk. She also had an older sister named Margaret, Duchess of Norfolk.

Her Father's Legacy

Alice's father passed away in August 1338. His only son, Edward of Norfolk, had died before him. This meant Alice and her older sister Margaret became their father's main heirs.

In March 1339, King Edward III gave an order. He told an official called a "escheator" to give Alice and her husband, Edward Montagu, their share of her father's lands.

Her Husband's Role

Alice's husband, Edward Montagu, was a brave knight. He fought in the famous Battle of Crecy in 1346. This was a big battle during the Hundred Years' War.

Edward Montagu was also called to join Parliament. This happened from 1348 to 1360. Because he was called to Parliament, he became known as Lord Montagu.

Alice's Passing

Alice of Norfolk passed away in Bungay, Suffolk, in early 1352. Her death was unexpected.

After her death, her surviving daughters became her heirs. These were Elizabeth, Maud, and Joan. The King decided who her two youngest daughters would marry. These daughters went to live with Alice's mother-in-law. Her mother-in-law was Elizabeth Montfort.

What Happened After

Alice's husband, Edward Montagu, married again. His second wife was named Joan. They had a son named Edward and two daughters. Their daughters were Elizabeth and Audrey.

Edward Montagu passed away on July 14, 1361. His son with Alice had died before him. His heir was his baby son by his second wife, also named Edward. However, this baby only lived for three more months.

When Edward Montagu died, his title of Lord Montagu could not be passed on directly. This meant his daughters from both marriages could claim it.

Edward Montagu's family symbol, or "arms," was a silver shield. It had three diamond shapes in the middle. Each diamond had an eagle on it.

Alice's Marriage and Children

Alice of Norfolk was first set to marry William Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. This was arranged by her father in 1333. William was the son of William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury. However, this marriage plan was later cancelled.

Instead, Alice married Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu. He was William's uncle. They married before August 1338. Edward was the youngest son of William Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu. His mother was Elizabeth Montfort.

Alice and Edward had one son and four daughters:

  • Edward Montagu: He was their only son. He passed away before February 1359. In 1343, his uncle arranged for him to marry Blanche Mowbray.
  • Audrey Montagu: She was alive in June 1349 but passed away before February 1359.
  • Elizabeth Montagu: Born around 1344, she died before July 1361. She married Walter Ufford. They did not have any children.
  • Maud Montagu: She passed away before October 1393. She became the Abbess of Barking Abbey in 1377. An abbess is the head of a community of nuns.
  • Joan Montagu: Born in February 1349, she died before June 1376. She married William de Ufford, 2nd Earl of Suffolk. They had four sons and one daughter.
