Who Was Edward Nevill?
Edward Nevill was a member of the important Neville family, a famous noble family in England. His father was Sir Edward Nevill. Edward was considered a "peer," which means he was a lord with a special title and rank in society.
The Title of Baron Bergavenny
When his first cousin, Henry Nevill, 6th Baron Bergavenny, passed away, Edward was generally seen as the next Baron Bergavenny. A "Baron" is a noble title, and a "Barony" is the land or title that goes with it.
However, there was a rule about how titles were passed down. Some people believed the title should have gone to Henry's daughter, Mary, Lady Fane. But in practice, Edward Nevill was the one who used the title and was known as the Baron. This is why he is sometimes called the de facto (meaning "in fact" or "in reality") 7th Baron.
