Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Edward Poole (born 1617, died 1673) was an English politician. He served as a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, at different times between 1640 and 1673.

Early Life and Education

Edward Poole was the oldest son of Sir Neville Poole of Kemble and his first wife, Frances Poole. His mother was the daughter of Sir Henry Poole of Saperton, Gloucestershire.

When he was 18, Edward started studying at Magdalen Hall, Oxford in May 1635. He then went on to study law at Lincoln's Inn in 1636.

Political Career

Serving in Parliament

In November 1640, Edward Poole was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Wootton Bassett. This was during a time known as the Long Parliament.

During this period, he took on several important roles:

  • In 1643, he helped manage property that the government had taken over in Wiltshire.
  • From 1643 to 1648, he helped collect taxes in Wiltshire.
  • In 1647, he worked on appeals for Oxford University.
  • In 1648, he helped organize the local army (militia) in Wiltshire.

Later in 1648, he was no longer allowed to be a member of Parliament.

Return to Public Service

In 1659, Edward Poole was again elected as an MP, this time for Cricklade. This was for the Third Protectorate Parliament.

He continued to be active in public life:

  • In March 1660, he helped organize the local army again.
  • By April 1660, he became a high-ranking officer (lieutenant-colonel) in the Militia.
  • He also became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wiltshire in March 1660. A J.P. helps keep law and order in their local area.

In April 1660, he was elected as an MP for Chippenham for the Convention Parliament. By July 1660, he was given the title of "Sir," meaning he was knighted.

He continued to help collect taxes until he died. From 1661, he also led a group of cavalry (soldiers on horseback). In 1661, he inherited his family's land in Oaksey or Oxsey, Wiltshire, from his father.

In 1668, he was elected as an MP for Malmesbury in a special election for the Cavalier Parliament. He also became a Deputy Lieutenant in 1668, helping the main leader of the county. Sir Edward Poole passed away in 1673.

Family Life

Sir Edward Poole married Dorothy Pye. She was the daughter of Sir Robert Pye of Faringdon, Berkshire. They got married around May 1638. They had four sons and one daughter.
